Hey Owain

You can do what a few of my mates do. Buy an old cheap clunker and on your
return to the airport just leave it in the car park!

Regards
Wally Menke

steve,

i'm planning on trying to make it although as yet i'm not too sure
exactly when and where it is! i will travel from london to chicago
and then rent or borrow a car to drive there. the problem with this
plan is that you can't rent interesting cars in the mid-west and not
many people own one either. so i may turn up late in an ageing gold
buick with a brown velour bench seat and suspension springs from a
sofa.

How are you getting there ? drive, trlr, truck ?
Where are you traveling from ?
Why is SUNI so far from anyplace ?
If you wanted to find a place difficult for everyone you couldn't have chosen
better than S Dakota.

The usual requirements for SUNI venues include (not in order of
importance):
- Space for several hundred people and 100+ cars, including trailer
storage
- Nearby location that is suitable for autocross
- Interesting scenery
- Decently drivable from any location in the US (despite the fact that
it's called "international", the vast majority of the attendees that
bring cars are from the US).
- Reasonable hotel rates

As it happens, wintertime resorts generally hit several of the above
requirements, and that puts most potential locations in the northern US.
The other thing is that the current Tiger ownership appears to be
concentrated towards the left and right coastlines in North America.
Pulling SUNI too far in one direction or the other will make the drive
pretty long for people that are in the other direction. Some people have
done 2500 mile one-way drives from Florida to attend each of the last
two SUNIs...

I'm not complaining. Suni 3 was about a nine hour drive for us, and Suni
4 about thirteen IIRC... Rapid City will be about 15, two days' driving
if all goes according to plan. See you all there, and I hope that the
location pulls more of the east-coast people in.

Steve R:

My wife and I are planning on going and, as you know, we live in Edmond, OK.
We plan on trailering the Tiger up there in the same trailer that I use to
race my Alpine out of. As far as the location, I personally think it's
great. It sucks being here in the middle of the country and getting only to
read about other Sunbeam events that always seem to happen on or close to
either coast. There should actually be quite a few cars show up from this
area of the country that no one has ever seen before...including mine.
Then, there is always the issue with the availability of the TAC process in
middle America...don't even get me started on that one.

So, as you can see, it's not a "difficult place for everyone." This will
probably be my one and only SUNI or any other major Sunbeam meet that I ever
get to attend. I, for one, am really looking forward to it! I'm also very
excited about getting to put faces with names on the Internet. Yes sir,
it's going to be a lot of fun!!

I have to say that the Black hills area of South Dakota is a very scenic
area for a drive. I really enjoy going up for the Sturgis motorcycle rally
every year, but I end up going early to get some good rides in, because the
Motorcycle rally turns the area into a zoo to the point that the crowds make
some of the scenic rides alot less scenic when you are stuck in traffic.

I am a bit concerned with how early in the year this is going on, I was kind
of under the impression that the weather may still be kind of unpredictible.
Of course, it is unpredictible in August as well when I am normally up
there, so I guess there is no fool proof time of year.

Is there a schedule posted yet for events and such?

I would like to drive up from the Colorado Springs area of Colorado, but
won't be able to invest a full week for the whole thing, so I was hoping
that I could see what was going on, and pick coming up early in the week vs
late in the week.

I especially would like to get my car TAC'd as well, so really would be
curious to know what days that will be going on.

Thanks,
Steve

Nine hours? 15 hours? Poor dears. For me, near Boston, 18 hours hard
driving only gets me to Indianapolis. How long would it take to get
from the east coast to this or any of the SUNI's? Sure there are a
few... Ummm...lets say "brave" individuals who have undertaken major
cross country journeys to past SUNIs, but not many. I flew to the two I
attended, not having the vacation time to drive. Or having the funds to
do major work to my Tiger to get it trustable for a several thousand
mile journey. Or afford a suitable tow vehicle and trailer.

So why not hold the next one somewhere significantly east of the
Mississippi? Sure, lots of west coast regulars might not make the
journey, but lots more east coast folks would.

Stu
I drove my Tiger from Rochester NY to the Big Sky SUNI, 4 day drive
with stops and sight seeing. I drove about 6,000 miles round trip that
time. The longest amount of time I drove on any one day was about 12 hours.

Rapid City would be about a 3 day trip for me with stops and sight seeing.
I hope to make the trip to Rapid City but it is too far off at the moment to
make that call. If I do go it will be about a 2 week trip.

It should not be that hard to get your Tiger road worthy for such a trip but
I realize everyone has a different situation and not everyone can get the
time to drive.

Driving there is more than half the fun and you have to make it fun
to drive. These cars were made to be driven, so drive. Are things going to
happen along the way, absolutely. Where do you think all the stories come
from, its an adventure. I had an ignition coil die in the Bighorn
Mountains just as I came to a scenic over look. Now what do you suppose was
the last thing I packed before leaving, yup, you guessed it a spare coil. I
swapped out the coil and drove back to the nearest Auto store and bought
another spare coil, just in case. I then had lunch to fuel me up and to
just relax for a time.

Years ago I sold my last motorcycle, a Honda Goldwing that I used for several long xcountry trips. Around groups of Honda riders the story was that you could pay for your trips by towing a small goldwing trlr filled with Harley parts.

Maybe next June I'll hook a trailer filled with Tiger and Alpine parts to my Civic and head towards SUNI. ;^)
