Harry:
I think what happened was that after Rootes ran out of the first allocation
of engines they had ordered from Ford, they must have ordered more. My
guess is that the first batch were painted black and the second,
blue. It's been my observation that cars with earlier numbers have black
engines and trannies and the later ones, blue. I don't know when the
changeover took place or if it was abrupt or a phased-in change. Maybe
Norm has some insight? Of course, I could be totally off the wall with
this. For the record, my Tiger, B382002384LRXFE (a late MkIA), born on
August 25, 1966, had its engine and gearbox painted blue.

If I read the BON correctly; your original engine date code should
be B19KC. Therefore any Tiger with an engine having a B19KC date code is
probably painted blue. This engine date code is first listed for a Tiger
built in September
1965. This also coincides with Ford changing engine color to Ford
Corporate Blue for the 1966 model year which occurred during the Summer of
1965.
All previous engines are most likely painted black and all engines
ordered after B19KC should be blue. Determining the first Tiger to receive
a B19KC engine code is harder. That information is not listed in TBON; so
if that Tiger still exits, the owner would have to chime in here with that
information.

I own B9471362 and the engine color is black, with a non painted transmision.
When I took out the tranny, it still had paint dabs of red and yellow with a
two letter code painted on the side of the tranny. It is the original tranny
and engine. The drivers front frost plug on the head had a 77 on it also.
The car had 39,000 miles on it when i got it, and the drive train is original.
Does anybody else have any markings from the factory on there car?
Thanks Terry

TBON does not state how many engines are in each date code and the
listings are too incomplete to make an accurate determination. This
information is probably in the Jensen records but I don't know who has
access to them; possibly Norm has copies of them. There are 14 engine date
codes listed in TBON and there is no consecutive order of production between
VIN number and engine date code.

Ron:
You are correct. My engine was painted blue, along with the gearbox and the
engine code is B19KC, #6994. Does BON say how many engines in each code?
It would seem that the engines and gearboxes came together, hence would have
the same color.

I own B382001405. My car was completely original, when I did my restoration. I could not tell what the engine color was, but the transmission was blue with the yellow letters 'HE', a yellow number '23' and a white letter 'X', all in different locations.

What happened, and when?
Firstly, Rootes made a habit, as do most Manufacturer's, of getting rid
of discontinued production stock before using the replacements. Note
the sudden change in the Alpine S-V in 1967. They changed the lip less
headlamp bezels part way through the model run. The MK II version was
introduced as a real model change.
Engine colors were yet yet another, change to "Ford Blue", although
these may have been "owners" changes. My '65 Mk I 4 bolt transmission
bell housing was the same color black as the engine. I did, however,
replace it with a much better "8" bolt transmission housing (dual 4),
which fits either earlier 5 bolt, or newer Mk II 6 bolt bell housings.
Without a differential change, the performance difference was
astounding. It was directly from a Mk II, and was painted the original
black, with low mileage. ( a strongly recommend change, and suitable for
289/302 6 bolt bell housings). Check with Bob Hokanson's article in
TigersUnited.com for a great online speed / ratio / rpm automatic spread
sheet and calculator.

I always thought all Ford Toploader 4 speeds were
painted cast finish from the factory. The paint was
not great and always looked poor after a few
years....Hard to imagine Rootes repainting the
