I need to stock up on spare nuts, bolts, screws, washers, etc. for my new Tiger
... can anyone recommend a source that sells some good assortments of stainless
hardware for the Tiger (I am under the understanding that the Tiger typically
uses American (standard) fine-pitch threads, but they are hard to find).
Also, do most people tend to use stainless steel or grade 8 or the like?
Thanks,
Peter

Peter, someone on the list recommended Totally Stainless and I followed
their advice and got a complete SS nut and bolt set for my Tiger.
It does not contain any of the high strength or really odd pieces but it is
pretty complete. I bought it several years ago and I think it was about $90
or so.
Here is their site totallystainless.net/totally.html

Bob

Yes. A few years ago, using the Tiger bolt list someone on this list put
together (I forget who, otherwise I'd give credit), I sorted it by size and
worked with Totally Stainless to put together a stainless steel kit for
Tigers. It is fairly complete, mostly lacking the #5 screws (which he would
make for us if enough of us wanted them to justify the run).
Speaking of which, does anybody have a source for the four little 5x44
screws for the door "vent window" frame?

I found a great selection, at good prices, at our local boat store.
Sold out of bins, and not expensive. During re-paint, bolts/nuts/screws
were replaced on assembly. You can NOT get stainless in a Grade 8, as
it won't carry the load. Stick with high strength steel, certified
Grade 8, for structural applications. Chrome plating can kill strength
of high strength steels due to hydrogen embrittlement. Requires
thorough "baking", after plating, to drive the hydrogen out.

Peter,
in California there a number of farm supply store chains. The local one is Orchards Supply and Hardware. They carry a better selection than Home Depot and 'almost' every bolt or washer on the Tiger can be had there in Grade 8. The AN fine bolts are in one section, and the ANCorse are in a separate area. The Grade 8s are in one area and the Grade 5 in another. They went out of their way to make it obvious what bolt grade and thread you were buying. I don't know why you need to 'stock up'? Most of us simply buy a bolt when it needs replacing. I don't stock bolts for my Tiger, or any other car I've owned. Buy when needed. I've found that all bolts are AN except those pesky seat latch bolts (metric). I'm probably going to get mail about some I don't know about. (the local hardware, esp farming hardware probably have any bolt you want, and the speed shops sell chrome bolt dress up kits which give you a big assortment)

Years ago at the Suni held in Indpls, Darrel Bruin gave a great seminar on
bolts and nuts. That's what his company sells. He too issued the warning
about the crap being sold in hardware stores and parts stores. He said
most Dromann bolts were being made off shore and barely meet specs.
He recommended an industrial source. I asked about Caterpillar bolts
and nuts. He said CAT bolts are all made in Peoria, IL and are quality
pieces. All are fine thread grade 8 or better and oil phosphate treated for
off
road and extreme moisture. Some even have 'CAT' on the bolt head.
He also said Deere bolts are fine too.
So go to your nearest CAT dealer. They can order what you need at
good prices, The sell bolts in almost length any can imagine.
Darrel also said to beware of most stainless steel stuff. Stainless
has to deal with the compostion of the metal, not its strength. Given
the choice between a pretty stainless 'grade 8' bolt and the black
grade 8 CAT bolt, go with CAT.
Food for thought.

In deference to correctness, I believe it's Darrell Brunn.
