Why do I tend to hang onto such useless, used-up, parts?Inherent pack-rat
genes, says the wife.
So today was clean-up day. Into the trash went broken wipers, busted OEM fuel
pump, petrified radiator hoses, etc.
But I found a rare rubber hose:
It's 36" long, 1/2" OD, closed at one end, grommet to allow a sheet metal pass
through 2" from the open end, six holes spaced approximately 2" apart at the
closed end--------this sat in my trunk unidentified for years till I saw one
in use at a concourse event.
Anyone guess?
Al J.

Dear Al,

Still the pack rat. You obviously have the special Rootes HOOKAH
(6783443-2), copied from the original design from British India.

This is the special Racing / Rally Hookah that is used by the factory
teams before events. You are missing the water bottle / hashish holder
that fits on the 1/2 inch tube end, through a cast Girling adapter,, and
the individual mouth tubes for team members that were plugged into the
six holes. This is for the driver / navigator teams for three car
entries, or 6 single driver race participants. The teams sit in close
proximity, and camaraderie, inhaling the invigorating media to prepare
for crossing the ice covered Alps roads at unbelievable speed. Can't do
that when you are straight!

The grommet pass-thru's are to hold posters of previous winners to
encourage greater effort on the current participants, and to separate
participants from any "hanky-panky".

Surprised you are unfamiliar with this practice.

Note, this is a Rootes Factory Racing part, and was NOT available as a
LAT option due to SCCA rules, and State laws, prohibiting driving under
the influence. Such niceties of overbearing regulation never stopped
the intrepid European drivers.

Happy New Year, and don't smoke it all alone.

Steve

Al:

It's the vent hose for the original battery. So the fumes wouldn't eat a
hole through
the wooden floor of the trunk (boot). Ha!

Happy New Year to all.

Well, well, the list wasn't sonambulistic, despite its sleep-inducing foray
into the arcane mystique of steering wheel refinishing. The mystery part is,
of course, the battery vent tube, as fifteen of you purists who still
treasure the original Coventry air in your spare tyre were quick to
acknowledge!

I have one in my trunk. Its the vent hose for the vent caps on the
LUCAS battery. The caps had little nipples that go into the hose.
The open end runs down next to the spare and through the trunk
floor to vent the hydrogen outside. At Big Sky I actually saw a
Tiger with the complete working setup including LUCAS battery.

The hole is another way to tell if your car has an Alpine floor.

The MKII Tigers had a special red plastic 'manifold' that had
LUCAS in raised letters. It rans across the caps and had a
black hose running at the end to the truck floor.

According to John Clegg, retired Rootes engineer, the vent hose
came about because one day Rootes was running a high speed
long duration on a Tiger in their new dyno shop. The generator/
regulator overcharged the battery creating so much hydrogen,
that the explosion almost burnt down the shop. Hence the
vent hose. John should know. He was there.
