Listers,
At some point this summer or fall I hope to put my motor back into the Tiger
so I wondered and would like to hear from anyone out here in Tigerland using
any of the mini starters available?

Such as...Powermaster Starters or Ford Racing Starters...part numbers? what
are the pros? and cons?...with installation...how they fit with
headers...etc...

Thanks In advance,
Paul

Paul,
I installed the mini-starter on my 5.0 conversion. Its much lighter and
better torque than the original starter. Ford Racing part numbers are
M11000-A50, 1.1kw hi-torque, $185
M11000-B50, 1.6kw, super hi-torque, $289
The clearance around the headers is superb, I can send you a
picture if you like.

I use this starter due to it's small size, power, and indexability:

jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Product/tf-Browse/s-10101/Pr-p_Product.CATENTRY_ID:2005181/showCustom-0/p-2005181/N-10101+111+4294965957/c-10101

Shop for specials, discounts and coupons from jcwhitney, I got mine for $199.00 (a while ago)!

Be aware that if you use an aftermarket (not an original stock flywheel), you may have to use the "automatic transmission" starter, not the manual trans starter.

Good Luck,
Henry V

I've got the same MG starter, but I bought it direct from the manufacturer.

Curtis,
If you have any pictures send them along...which one did you use? and is
BIGGER better? or if the A50 does the job then is the B50 just overkill and
a waste of money?

Summit Racing has the A50 for $135.00 and the B50 for $225.00. I haven't
used one yet but I'm planning to put one on the 5.0 crate motor that is
sitting in my garage now and going in the car very soon.

Paul
Ford makes a permanent magnet starter that fits all 289, 302 and 351Ws, of
this I'm sure from personal uses. It is smaller than the standard starter and
much stronger. It comes with the connecting loom as it uses a relay and is
really easy to install. It's also listed in SVO catalog (mine seems have develop
legs and ran off).

These starters have a support bearing at the end of the shaft just like all
Ford starters. Most, if not all of the mini-hi torque starters do not have
this support.

My 289 Cobra and 351W Pantera all use this starter and removing and
replacing is a snap Each have to have various other parts removed, or the engine
jacked up with the stock starter.

You guys are missing the best part....the sound!

These babies sound just like an external starter on an F1 car....
That characteristic high pitched gear whine that is mildly addictive....

At least mine does! (Worth the price of admission....)

Cheers,

Dave

On Wednesday, I had the distinct pleasure of inspecting an Enzo Ferrari up
close, and then listening to the owner (a Canadian lady) fire it up and
drive off winding through the gears. If one of these starters sounds 1/10 as
good, it's worth every penny.
