You are correct in what you say. I am running a 30 % O.D. top-loader
with 2:88 gears/260 and it is too tall by a hair in 4th. 60 MPH is
about 2200 RPM. If I drop just a few hundred RPM to below the 2000
mark it is shift time. For my type of driving I would prefer to have
a 20% O.D. and am going to change the final drive gears to make this
happen . . . just have not yet figured out how to calculate what gear
ratio would make this happen for me.
