Brent,

I took my tanks and crossover tubes to a local radiator shop. They
chemically stripped them inside and out and coated the inside with a red
fuel tank lining. I think I paid $45 or $50 for the whole works. I
repainted the outsides with an eggshell black. They look good but I have
not put gas in them yet.

Their was discussion a while back about the paint inside of the gas
tanks to protect it from rust. I now have these out of the S5 and
noticed the lining is black, but do not know if it is black paint or if
the liner is black. Their was some flaking when it dried but we need to
completely clean these out. I may or may not treat the inside but will
paint the outside. I was told even the best inside sealer can still
cause a problem in the future and by keeping the tanks full of gas, one
can avoid the rust problem. Any firsthand opinions appreciated. Thanks
Brent

"I think I paid $45 or $50 for the whole works." - WOW, That sounds way
too cheap. Jan and I have tanks dipped and treated all the time and we
pay MUCH more than that. It costs at least $40 per tank to just have
them treated and that's if there are no holes to be repaired. If they
have holes, the price goes WAY up. I'd say dipping costs are around $75
per small late series tank, $100 per large early Series tank and $35 for
the three cross tubes. I'll keep them busy all year round if it was $50
for the entire shooting match. - Ian

I had my Sunbeam Funwagon tank done out here in Nebraska, and a dip, derust,
hole patch, and seal job cost me about 90 bucks American.

By comparison, when I needed a similar repair on a '58 MG Magnette tank (OK,
so I did dabble a LITTLE in non-Rootes cars) while I lived in New Jersey, I
couldn't find a single shop that would do it for ANY price. Fortunately, I
had connections back then to get the raw materials, and did it myself!

I am in Huntsville Alabama and the shop is Pruitt Radiator. I checked my
receipt and I paid $85 in June of 2000 for both tanks and all three
crossover pieces. The tanks had no holes and were not rusty on the inside.
Almost all the coating had peeled but the metal was very clean.
