We are ready for a S5 alternator rebuild, but before we take it to the
shop, is their a better unit on the market that will fit a S5 Alpine,
without much hassle of wires, brackets, etc? Thanks Brent

Brent,
Doug at Tiger Auto (and we do to)recommended using the later Lucus
(all-in-one) alternator that was used on the later MGBs.

If it's any help the version fitted to the SV is the same as the Jag E-Type
S1-S2.

I happen to know this as I overhauled the one on my neighbour's Jag recently.
